Tai Chi: Beginning Tai Chi in Your 50s

Updated: Mar 19, 2024

If you don't use you'll lose it and the older we get the more true the statement becomes. Exercise. A dreaded word for many. It doesn't have to be but who has time? "I don't want to go to a gym where people stare at me". I hear you. Fortunately, Tai Chi can be done in the comfort of your home and doesn't take a lot of time.

No, you don't need the fancy clothes to do Tai Chi but they look cool.

beginning tai chi or What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi, often referred to as "moving meditation," is a Chinese martial art that combines gentle, flowing movements with deep breathing and mental focus. Tai Chi is based on the Taoist philosophy of yin-yang which are two opposing forces, mutually dependent upon each other. Take day and night for example, one cannot exist without the other. You wouldn't know what daylight was unless there was darkness. Another example: lets say you are standing in the mirror and want to check out your guns (arms).

When you strike that pose your biceps contract and the triceps extend. The biceps and triceps are opposing muscle groups yet are dependent upon each other for contraction and extension of your arm.

I can hear you now but, the mind-body connection isn't woo woo, new age alternative stuff. Science proves our thoughts, emotions, beliefs and attitudes are tied into our physical well being. For example: it has been shown when someone is suffering from depression it can weaken the immune system and cause inflammation in the body which could contribute to conditions like cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders and chronic pain.

Benefits of Tai Chi

There are many advantages to practicing Tai Chi, I have listed four key benefits below:

1. Improved Balance and Flexibility

Maintaining balance and flexibility becomes crucial as we age. The slow, controlled movements of Tai Chi help strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility.

2. Stress Reduction and Mental Clarity

Tai Chi is a great tool for relaxation and mental clarity. By focusing on the present moment and synchronizing movements with breath, practitioners often experience reduced stress and heightened mental well-being.

3. Joint Pain Relief

Many individuals in their 50s may experience joint pain or stiffness from conditions like arthritis or old injuries. Tai Chi's gentle, low-impact movements can help alleviate joint pain by minimizing strain on the joints.

4. Enhanced Mind-Body Connection

Tai Chi emphasizes the connection between mind and body, encouraging practitioners to be fully present in each movement. Through consistent practice, you will gain awareness of your body, fostering a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection.

Starting Your Tai Chi Journey

Tai Chi doesn't require any background in exercise whatsoever. Here are some tips to get started:

1. Find an Instructor or school:

If there is one in your area that would be great. A Tai Chi instructor can provide guidance on proper form and technique. If there are no instructors available in your area, simply head to you tube and do a quick search for Tai Chi where you will find many videos to follow.

2. Start Slowly:

Tai Chi is all about gradual progression. It's a slow exercise to begin with so remember, there's no rush, focus on enjoying the process and listening to your body. However, don't underestimate Tai Chi, it is a good workout.

3. Practice Consistently:

Like any exercise consistency is key. Start by practicing Tai Chi 15 minutes a day, gradually increasing the duration as you gain an understanding of the movements.

4. Listen to Your Body:

Pay attention to how your body responds to each movement. If something feels uncomfortable or painful, modify the movement or seek guidance from your instructor if you have one. Tai Chi should never cause strain or discomfort.

Starting Tai Chi is not just about improving physical health; it's about learning the mind-body connection.
